Observing Programme Scientist
Position description
The Observing Programme Scientist designs observations with the radio telescope and assists in their execution. Their work begins with target selection and extends through to data analysis and the extraction of conclusions from the results. They collaborate with the technical teams of the project (Electrical, Mechanical, Robotics) to optimise the radio telescope and ensure successful observations with it.
Responsibilities
- Designing observation programmes based on scientific objectives
- Identifying and evaluating potential observable sources
- Operating the radio telescope during observations
- Analysing data that we collected
- Studying the theoretical background of radio targets
- Drawing conclusions from results
- Collaborating with technical teams to define the specifications required for the radio telescope
- Providing feedback to other subteams on radio telescope operation
Recommended Skills: knowledge of Astronomy and celestial coordinates, Electromagnetism and wave theory, Python knowledge, familiarity with astronomical software such as Stellarium (optional)
Skills You Will Develop
- You will learn to design and execute observation programmes with a radio telescope
- You will learn to operate a radio telescope and understand its technical parameters
- You will learn to analyse astronomical data
- You will become familiar with the use of astronomical software
- You will learn to code in Python
- You will understand celestial coordinate systems and radio astronomy
- You will work in an interdisciplinary research team
