Workshop Engineer

Position Description
This position will give you the opportunity to develop your skills and broaden your thinking on engineering design, material strength and manufacturing processes by combining your knowledge of manufacturing parts of a radio telescope.
Useful skills for the position
  • Experience in mechanical design.
  • Basic knowledge of statics and material strength.
  • Experience in basic manufacturing processes and material selection.
  • Experience in the use of metalworking machinery.
Responsibilities
  • Manufacturing of parts of the radio telescope.
  • Test and processing of materials through various machining operations.
  • Testing and testing of materials and selection of materials and processing treatments for the manufacture of components.
  • Research of materials market.
  • Working with the rest of the team to address technical challenges and optimize the final design.
Skills You Will Develop
  • Use of tools Fully understand and become familiar with basic material processing tools for fabricating radio telescope parts.
  • Understanding of material properties Full understanding and familiarity with material properties and finding the appropriate material through libraries.
  • Astronomical Applications: You will build mechanisms which in collaboration with robotics will have the potential to be applied to real astronomical systems, enhancing your knowledge of radio telescope observation and motion.
  • Solving Technical Problems: You will gain skills in solving problems that arise when researching and designing support bases and torsion mechanisms for a truss, improving your critical thinking and solution finding skills.
  • Teamwork: You will develop collaborative skills, communicating and contributing to a team that combines technology and science.
